Brand purpose explains why your business deserves to exist and what difference you want to make to the people you serve. To define it, start with what you do, listen to your customers and turn that information into a basis for making decisions. The polished wording comes later.
If your draft says ‘transforming the future through innovative solutions’, it is time to get back to the shop floor. What do you do differently when someone walks in, asks for a quote or needs help? That is where things get interesting.
What is brand purpose, and how does it differ from a slogan?
Brand purpose guides business decisions; a slogan distils a message so you can communicate it.
It also helps to distinguish purpose, mission and vision. As a working approach, use purpose to explain the contribution you aim to make, mission to specify what you do and for whom, and vision to describe where you want to go. You do not need a dissertation: you need your team to understand each answer.
One real example is La Fageda, which connects its activity with improving quality of life and social inclusion for people at risk of exclusion in La Garrotxa through meaningful work. Its contribution is tied to a specific activity. That connection is what you should look for at your own scale.
What evidence do you need before writing your purpose?
You need real situations that show whom you help, what problem you solve and which decisions you are prepared to stand by.
Gather three types of material: customer feedback, team decisions and verifiable features of your service. A thank-you email can start a conversation; on its own, it does not show what all your customers think.
Try these questions in a short meeting:
- What problem did the customer have before calling us?
- Which part of our work took a worry off their mind?
- What have we turned down because it conflicted with how we work?
- Which promises can we back up today?
Speak to people who did not buy, too. Perhaps the price was too high, perhaps they did not understand the offer, or perhaps they wanted something different. Avoid listening only to the applause.
Write down each idea alongside its evidence. If you say ‘we are approachable’, note an observable behaviour, such as explaining the quote before it is accepted. If you cannot find evidence, treat it as an aspiration you still need to fulfil.
How do you write a brand purpose for an SME?
Bring together the people you help, the change you seek and the specific way you contribute.
You can start with this structure: ‘We exist so that [specific people] can [meaningful improvement], through [way of working].’ Use it as scaffolding, then remove it once the sentence sounds like your business.
Imagine a fictional appliance repair business in Albacete. Its initial proposal might be ‘to provide excellent service’. That could go on any van, so it says very little.
After reviewing its decisions, it might say: ‘We help households extend the life of their appliances through clear diagnoses and repairs that are worthwhile.’ This is a hypothetical example, not an Ocelot case study.
The wording forces you to clarify how you explain the diagnosis, what the quote includes and when you should recommend a replacement. If the company does not work this way yet, it needs to adjust its service first. Putting the words on a website will not close that gap.
How can you tell whether your purpose helps you make decisions?
Your purpose is useful if it helps you choose between real options and explain why you rule some out.
Test it against three situations your company might face this month: a promotion, a complaint and a new service line. Write down the decision you would make and the cost you would accept to stand by it.
In the repair example, a consistent promotion might explain when a repair is worthwhile and what an inspection includes. A campaign promising to fix everything would conflict with that principle. The difference lies in what the business is willing to promise.
Ask customer service and operations to work through these situations separately. Then compare their answers: would they give the same information, accept the same job and explain a refusal in the same way? If they disagree, clarify the behaviour before signing off the wording.
Over the following month, record one decision that changed because of the purpose and another where it did not help. If it never changes a choice or clears up a doubt, make it more specific. This tests its internal usefulness, not its profitability.
How do you translate it into your brand identity?
Apply it to messaging, design and customer service using the same evidence that supports the promise.
At Ocelot, brand design covers positioning, tone, personality and visual identity. Together, these allow an idea to take different forms, from a website homepage to a quote.
Start by reviewing one service page and one sales response. Check whether they explain whom you help, how you work and what the customer can expect. You do not need to repeat your purpose word for word in every paragraph: you need to act in line with it.
If you want to turn this exercise into a brand strategy with personality, we can help at Ocelot. Bring your decisions and your questions; we will find the words that do them justice.

Frequently asked questions about brand purpose
Purpose can be specific and open to revision, even in small businesses.
Does a self-employed professional need a brand purpose?
It can help you choose customers, services and messages using clear criteria. Start with a simple sentence and see whether it helps with real decisions.
Does your purpose have to solve a global problem?
It can focus on a specific improvement for your customers or your local area. Credibility depends on what you can sustain, even if your reach extends only to one neighbourhood.
Can a company's purpose change?
You can review it when your business or the needs you serve change. Before replacing it with a passing trend, check what has changed in your decisions and the value you create.
